Editorial review
“Discover the results of this in-depth study, “Workforce Challenges 2025,” which offers a unique and independent analysis of the core transformer and switchgear industries: its people! This study sheds light on the current strengths of our expertise, as well as the risks associated with imminent retirements and the limited attractiveness of the industry to draw new talent for future operations and developments.
This report provides both main and detailed insights into the current state of our workforce, along with keys to preparing for the future from an HR perspective for all stakeholders in our industry, from employees and business leaders to HR professionals and managers.
Since at least last year’s Industry Navigator study, it has been clear that the main limiting factor for the worldwide growth of our industry is talent acquisition and retention. This year’s report goes even further by offering a comprehensive view of how people feel today and what to expect tomorrow, insights never before publicly available.
I am convinced that everyone in our industry has experienced knowledge gaps or difficulties in getting “the right people in the right places.” This analysis provides clues and keys to understanding the situation and improving it now, while also preparing for a better tomorrow.”

About the report
The Workforce Challenges 2025 report is the first global study in the transformer and switchgear industry to focus on people rather than technology. Building on insights from the Transformer Champions Club and industry-wide discussions on workforce readiness, this research explores the human factors shaping operational continuity and future growth.
Conducted with organisational development experts, the study examines workforce demographics, skill gaps, job satisfaction, leadership practices, organisational culture, and talent strategies. It highlights issues such as generational transitions, succession planning, and the low share of young professionals entering the sector.
The findings are based on responses from 704 professionals across 85 countries and six continents, representing manufacturers, utilities, consultants, and educational institutions. The data reflects a mature and experienced professional base, while also underscoring challenges linked to retirement trends, rising turnover, and competition from other industries.
Respondents identified the need for stronger leadership, clearer career paths, inclusive workplaces, and greater emphasis on adaptability, emotional intelligence, and continuous learning.
The report diagnoses current issues and offers practical direction, providing actionable insights to help organisations attract, retain, and prepare the talent needed for a resilient, future-ready industry.
