Job Summary

Dominion Energy is seeking a Summer 2023 Intern to be a part of the System Protection Engineering – Generator Interconnects team within Electric Transmission. The candidate will be part of a team that develops protective relay settings for the Dominion Energy system, specifically related to renewables and Distributed Generation. Candidates should have a strong electrical engineering background and possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices; preferably in electric power systems. A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as PSS\E, Python, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN OneLiner, etc., is also preferred.

Job Activity

  • Develop protective relay settings for Electric Distribution and Transmission protection schemes related to distributed generation, including: transformer protection, feeder protection, bus protection, breaker protection, capacitor bank protection, etc.
  • Assisting in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of computer-based tools for Dominion Energy’s engineering groups.
  • Developing protection requirements memos related to the connection of renewables and distributed generation to the Dominion Energy system.
  • Power system network model validation

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • General understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including an understanding of three-phase power systems
  • General knowledge and understanding of substation components and their functions
  • Ability to read and interpret substation and transmission operating one-line diagrams, and relay functional drawings
  • General understanding of the protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders,and major substation equipment
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as PSS\E, Python, Power Gem’s TARA software, AspenOne-Liner, etc., is preferred
  • Self-motivator who has the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information
  • A 3.2 or higher GPA is preferred

Education Requirements

Must be enrolled in an Electrical Engineering degree program from an ABET accredited Engineering program at a four year or post-graduate college or university. Candidates must have a 3.2 minimum GPA.

Must have a graduation date of 2024, Spring 2025, Winter 2025, Spring 2026 or Winter 2026
