Powell’s Automation Division is currently hiring a Senior System Engineer. If you are selected, you will be part of a team of engineers responsible for integration of intelligent electronic devices (IED’s) into a supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) through the use of various graphical interface packages, PLC’s, electrical protection relays and power metering devices.The electrical power industry is among the most safety-conscious groups in the world. Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop tag database in graphical interface software packages
  • Develop graphical representation of electrical switchgear one-line drawings and relay faceplates.
  • Setup communication parameters and establish communications with electrical protection relays, PLC’s, intelligent motor starter trip units, electrical metering devices etc.
  • Provide technical support for equipment production design engineering.
  • Provide testing of SCADA equipment during factory acceptance test (FAT).
  • Provide support for testing of SCADA equipment during site acceptance test (SAT).
  • Provide training as required for plant personnel in operation of the SCADA equipment.
  • Perform relay protection setting testing and generate test reports.
  • Review and analyze customer provided coordination and short circuit studies
  • Generate protection logic and protection settings based upon provided coordination and short circuit studies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of 3 phase power systems
    • Know difference between line-line voltage and line-neutral voltage
    • Phase angle shifts when dealing with transformers
    • Identify PT, CT, transformer, and/or breaker symbols on a single line diagram
    • Generate and understand Boolean logic
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience
  • Hands on applicative programming experience with protective relays from vendors like SEL, GE, Siemens, Basler and/or ABB

Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with power focus
    • Preferred 5-7 years’ experience

Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements

  • This is an experienced position and it is expected that the candidate show applicable automation experience with several of the power applications listed below.
  • Familiarity with SCADA software such as WonderWare InTouch, Allen Bradley Factory Talk, Copa-Data Zenon, Siemens, WinCC, and/or SEL RTAC HMI
  • Experience in programming PLCs from vendors like Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE (Now Emerson)
  • Ability to perform secondary injection of voltage and current signals to test programming and protective settings for protection relays
  • Knowledge and application of typical industrial communication protocols like Profibus, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, DNP 3.0, and IEC 61850
  • Understanding communication network architectures and have the ability to design and program network switches to function within a network architecture
  • Need to know the differences between network architecture protocols such as PRP, HSR, RSTP, and basic ring configurations in order to program the network devices and Ethernet switches
  • Time synchronization protocols like IRIG, SNTP, and PTP are essential for protective relays and so the candidate must know how to implement those protocols on devices like HMIs, PLCs, and protective relays across Ethernet networks (SNTP/PTP)
  • Exposure to programming and testing of transfer schemes with either PLCs or relays and the different types of schemes (Fast, In Phase, and/or Residual)
  • Be able to program and test load shed schemes using PLCs or protection relays utilizing IEC 61850 communication protocol
  • Demonstrate an understanding of applicable experience programming and testing generator controllors such as Woodwards or Baslers

Working & Environmental Conditions

  • Travel is required for this position. The amount of travel is estimated to be 25% of the time to customer sites.
  • The customer sites can be refineries, utility substation yards or even offshore platforms.
  • The position will contain working in an office environment as well has performing testing on the manufacturing floor with the equipment
