The Transmission Stations Engineering Division provides engineering services and expertise related to the design of electric utility substations. We provide engineering design for substation projects, including civil, electrical, fire protection, mechanical, and structural. The Division is also responsible for the specification, evaluation, and acquisition of major electrical equipment and construction service. We provide engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction documentation, and engineering oversight of work done by engineering service partners. We also provide technical support during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning.
We currently have an exciting technical leadership opportunity for a Specialist Engineer in the Transmission Stations’ Equipment Engineering team. At the specialist level, particular focus is placed on high level conceptual strategy and engineering studies, overseeing and guidance of detailed engineering designs, development of engineering standards, meeting regulatory compliance requirements, and integrating new equipment and innovative technologies into our power system to ensure long term needs are met.
What you’ll do
Working closely with other Engineering disciplines, the Equipment Specialist Engineer provides technical leadership and guidance and successfully carries out the following duties:
* Provides technical leadership and acts as an expert technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical advice in programs, projects, and initiatives within and outside the Division.
* Mentors, supports, and provides advice to team members, encourages their work initiative, and helps them grow as engineers and technical leaders. Demonstrates BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce.
* Leads a technical area of responsibility on behalf of the Equipment Engineering (e.g.: standards program, procurement strategies, regulatory compliance, implementation of innovative technologies and technical solutions etc.)
* As an experienced professional engineer, engages in the engineering of Transmission Stations and develops specialized knowledge in this area. Analyzes and resolves challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence.
* Coordinates projects of medium to high complexity, plans resources, develops work packages, writes specifications and standards, estimates costs, and provide technical and site support during the installation and commissioning of electrical components in substations.
* Provides technical direction to engineers, consultants, and technical support staff, manages resources, and develops innovative methods for solving engineering problems.
* Reviews work of the project team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
* Builds and maintains professional relationships with technical standards bodies, industry collaboration groups and peer utilities to stay current with industry trends and requirements, and best practices to inform BC Hydro’s standards and design practices.
* Chairs meetings to address engineering problems, actively participates in seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences, and prepares and delivers presentations to various audiences.
What you bring
The successful candidate must have the following qualifications and attributes:
* A degree in Engineering (preferably electrical power engineering) recognized by Canadian Universities. Higher educational qualifications will be treated accordingly.
* Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
* Minimum of twelve (12)+ years of engineering experience in a relevant field, including experience in North American electric utilities, industrial or manufacturing plants.
* Strong ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in English, analytical, interpersonal communication, and presentation skills.
* Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment of complex multistage projects, including planning, estimating, cost control and managing project resources.
* Demonstrate effectiveness in work leadership and providing technical direction to junior, intermediate, and senior engineers. The successful candidate shall demonstrate:
* In depth technical knowledge in electrical equipment for transmission utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV.
* In depth technical knowledge in specifying requirements, conceptual designs, and performance criteria for substation equipment such as: switchgear, circuit breaker, disconnect switches, transformers, current and voltage transformers, surge arresters, cables, station service systems etc.
* Strong ability to develop procurement strategies, participate in strategic sourcing, vendor analysis, negotiation, design review and equipment acceptance.
* Broad knowledge in the electrical, mechanical, civil, Protection and Control disciplines and operating requirements of components used to build such systems.
* Requires a Class 5: Driver’s License.
