There is a long line of renewable projects waiting for grid access on nearly every power grid in the world. Those closest to climate change understand that the grid itself is currently the biggest barrier to a clean energy future – not the cost of wind and solar farms, which are already a lower cost than power plants using fossil fuels. Smart Wires allows utilities to use the grid 20-40% more efficiently, by “pushing power” off of overloaded lines and “pulling power” onto under loaded transmission lines. You can think of Smart Wires as a revolutionary “router” for power on the grid, allowing far higher integration of renewable energy at a cost that is much lower than new power lines and other legacy solutions.

We just announced a $75M equity infusion from a premier set of investors. THE POSITION

Smart Wires is seeking a passionate Sr. Mechanical Engineer (SME) to join our R&D team who is practically minded, design-oriented and hands-on, yet demonstrates an aptitude for high-level theoretical analysis.

The ideal candidate will conduct engineering activities to support the development of several patented marketed and close-to-market electro-mechanical power flow control systems for use in electrical power grid environments.

The job requires a detail-oriented individual who is highly motivated and self-directed who will assume a critical role in the development of new products through full-scale design, fabrication, testing and manufacturing.

Primary Responsibilities

Product design and development, including integrated large transformer assemblies, large power electronics assemblies and enclosure systems, with high safety, excellent reliability, long lifetime, exceptional manufacturability and appropriately low cost.
Develop engineering specifications for Smart Wires Inc. products and tools based on interaction with Management, Sales, Service, Manufacturing, and R&D staff.
Design components, assemblies, and tooling to support Smart Wires Inc. research and development activities.
Produce engineering documents including part and assembly drawings, manufacturing instructions, and bills of material.
Perform engineering analyses and finite element simulation of designs.
Analyze and solve technical problems, and provide solutions that can be implemented in a timely manner.
Analyze failures reported by Quality and Service departments, and create engineering change orders as required.
Perform laboratory tests to verify design functionality and validate performance predicted by simulations.
Interact with outside consultants and subject matter experts.

Required Skills and Experience

PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
10 – 15 years of engineering work experience.
Strong communications capabilities.
Significant experience in FEA for structural static and dynamic, and thermal analyses.
Significant experience in Design of Experiments and experiment planning and execution, test fixture design, procurement and fabrication.
Good knowledge of engineering materials and manufacturing methods, especially aluminum for fatigue, wear, impact, temperature extremes and corrosion, and dielectric insulations for high and low voltages, and sealing and potting materials for chemical compatibility and aging due to long term exposure to weather.
Proficiency in using SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM Vault, and SolidWorks Simulation Package to create design concepts, manage and generate detailed drawings and assemblies, analyze parts, and material.

Preferred Skills and Experience

PhD in Mechanical Engineering
Ability to think and act technically and business-wise simultaneously.
Competent with SolidWorks modeling and simulation.
2 years’ transformer manufacturing design experience is a plus.

This position is located in our Union City, California facility.
