With the integration of carbon neutral renewable energy sources in the electricity network, transformers may face unpredictable load patterns with high fluctuations where overloading could become necessary for economic reasons or simply to ensure a continuous energy supply. Listed as a possible failure of short-time emergency loading, with high temperatures and rapid temperature rises, bubble formation from transformer winding insulation is a potential operational risk (IEC 60076-14). Despite the general agreement that the water content in the insulation paper is the most significant impact parameter, results vary widely amongst different studies even for conditions claimed to be similar. Additionally, the potential impact of parameters like paper/liquid types, or their state of ageing, is not fully understood. This questions the global applicability of the provided formula in the IEC/IEEE standards to calculate the bubble formation temperature and will be covered in this presentation.
