Unexpected transformer outages can paralyze entire regions, yet many of the faults that trigger them begin as micro‑scale insulation defects known as partial discharges (PD). Like faint sounds physicians hear through a stethoscope, these acoustic signals appear long before outward symptoms. This article presents OptiFender®, a fiber‑optic acoustic‑emission platform that performs around‑the‑clock monitoring and three‑dimensional localization of PD while a transformer remains energized. Drawing on a successful 2024 deployment at a 380/150/50 kV substation, we demonstrate how early detection supports condition‑based maintenance, reduces life‑cycle cost, and strengthens grid resilience.
