Kenya building new substations to prevent countrywide outages

Kenya, Nairobi: After many parts of the country suffered a six-hour blackout at the start of the year due to a technical fault in the central fields of Dandora-Nairobi North, Kenya’s Energy Cabinet Secretary, Charles Keter, revealed the steps to be taken to help prevent such widespread outages in the future.

Kenya Power procures 70% of materials locally

Kenya Power currently sources 70% of its materials locally, having spent more than $155 million on locally-manufactured materials during the financial year to 30th June 2017, reports ESI-Africa.

$2.17B investment plan to see hundreds of new substations built

Kenya, Nairobi: Kenya Power has revealed its five-year investment programme worth $2.17 billion, which will include capital projects aimed at adequately suppling power to 10.8 million customers by 2021, more than double the 4.8 million clients who are currently connected to the national grid.

Kenya orders 8,000 transformers

India: Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems India (TTDI) has won a $34 million contract from Kenya Power & Lighting Company (KPLC) for the supply of around 8,000 distribution transformers made at the company’s facility in Hyderabad.
