Namibiba’s state-owned power utility NamPower has signed a contract with two Chinese companies to start building the country’s largest solar power plant.

NamPower, the national electricity utility, will use the loan as it seeks to wean itself off electricity imports from neighbouring countries.

The project was funded by the World Bank, and is part of an initiative to expand the utility’s transmission network by 800 km.

Last Friday, an executive announced that a new indoor substation with a 132/66/33 kV capacity will be constructed outside Swakopmund’s coastal town.
