United Kingdom, Staffordshire: Alstom employees at Alstom have built 32 giant transformers and are celebrating after sending the first of those transformers from Stafford to India.

The transformers were built as part of Alstom’s Champa contract in India worth €400 million ($506 million) to connect the power stations of Champa in central India to Khurukshetra in Northern India along a 1,365 km transmission line.

Each transformer weighs 290 tonnes, is 5.1 m high and 5 m wide. Once on site in India with extra kit added, the transformer will weigh 445 tonnes, will be 16 m high and 28 m long. The 800 kV transformer is one of the biggest machines ever produced in Stafford and more than double the voltage of those used by National Grid in the UK.

Alstom is one of only three companies in the world to have designed, manufactured and tested transformers at this voltage level.
