Taiwan: Seventeen people working on the Hai Long Changhua onshore substation, which is part of the Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan, were hospitalised on 20 August after a carbon dioxide leak at the substation. The incident was first reported by the media in Taiwan, referring to Changhua County Fire Department as their source. Reports say that the incident has left 14 on-site workers injured and 3 critically. The initial assessment into the cause revealed that CO2 had leaked from the fire suppression equipment at the substation.

Northland Power, one of the three Hai Long consortium partners, issued a statement confirming that the incident happened at around 10:00 a.m. local time, noting that an investigation into the details was ongoing, but that the preliminary information cited a leak of carbon dioxide from the fire suppression system. The company further stated that emergency services were immediately notified, and first aid measures were promptly administered on-site, adding that all work at the onshore substation was suspended until further notice while investigations are underway.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and partners remain our top priority. Our current focus is on the well-being of the affected workers and their families. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available,” John Brace, Executive Chair, said.

The site of the offshore wind farm, which has a capacity of 1022 MW, is approximately 45-70 km off the Changhua coast in the Taiwan Strait and construction is currently underway.
