Australia: A major milestone for the New England Solar and Battery Project is underway, with a 171-t transformer making its way across regional roads on a 60-metre-long convoy.
Transported on an 18-axle trailer connected to three prime movers, the transformer is being delivered to the renewable energy site as part of the project’s large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). The trailer includes an advanced independent steering system to help navigate tight corners on the route.
The week-long, 1,000 km journey began at the Port of Brisbane and will pass through Tamworth and Uralla this weekend. Two additional trucks will assist in hauling the load up the Moonbi Range before the convoy continues through Uralla’s main street and arrives at the project site.
Sarah Donnan, Project Manager for New England Solar, said slight traffic delays may occur. “The convoy will move as efficiently and safely as possible, but we ask motorists to be cautious and patient,” she said.
The transformer will be positioned on a designated bay where final electrical and commissioning work will be carried out.
“This is a significant milestone for our 400 MWh battery,” Donnan said. “The system will store excess power and release it when demand rises, helping stabilise the grid.”
The battery is set to be fully operational by 2026.
