Transformer fire shuts unit of South Carolina NPP
USA, South Carolina: A transformer at the Oconee nuclear power plant in South Carolina caught fire on Sunday 6 March, burning for about 30 minutes, but no nuclear material was in danger of being released, Reuters reports.
The affected Unit 1 at the Oconee Nuclear Station, owned by Duke Energy, has been shut down as a precaution and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire did not lead to any evacuations and there was no threat to the public from the fire.
The run-off from the firefighting water mixed with foam and transformer oil is being contained on site.
