TANGEDCO to save money by installing bellows on transformers
India, Chennai: Tamil Nadu State government is expected to save millions it has been spending on the maintenance of high-voltage power transformers as the Research & Development wing of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is to introduce bellows in order to preserve transformer insulation.
India, Chennai: Tamil Nadu State government is expected to save millions it has been spending on the maintenance of high-voltage power transformers as the Research & Development wing of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is to introduce bellows in order to preserve transformer insulation.
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) recognized in its reports that the frequent power interruptions are caused by poor maintenance of power transformers. TANGEDCO officials said that premature failure was not only caused by high temperature and oxygen and moisture entering the components of a power transformer, but also by deterioration of the insulating material, reports The New Indian Express.
In an attempt to preserve the quality of oil and paper insulation as well as other main components, TANGEDCO’s R&D wing is launching a project to extend the life of transformers by installing external bellows.
According to TANGEDCO R&D engineer who is a part of this project, bellows are metallic vessels attached below the power transformers’ breather. They prevent entry of oxygen and moisture besides removing moisture from the solid insulation in a gradual manner.
During the first phase of this project, bellows will be attached to 900 33 kV transformers and 1,600 110 kV transformers.
