Siemens wins HVDC contract for European interconnector

Belgium and Germany: The German Transmission System Operator Amprion and the Belgian Transmission System Operator Elia have signed a contract with Siemens for the delivery of the two high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) converter stations for the first electricity interconnector between Germany and Belgium.

As part of the €273 million ($289 million) contract, Siemens will be responsible for the system design and the supply, installation and commissioning of all components for both converter stations, including power transformers and associated electrical equipment.

The Aachen Liège Electricity Grid Overlay (ALEGrO) is a major infrastructure project and part of the European electricity highway system which uses 90-km long underground cables to connect the Belgian and German high-voltage electricity systems.

ALEGrO is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2020.
