First 800 kV power transformer for 10,000 MW UHVDC link tested

The world’s first 800 kV power transformer for a 10,000 MW ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link has been successfully tested.

The 800 kV transformer, which has been type-tested by ABB, is a key component of the Shanghaimiao-Shandong ±800 kV UHVDC transmission link, capable of transmitting up to 10,000 MW of power – enough power to serve the needs of more than 20 million people, the manufacturer said in a press statement.

UHVDC technology is able to transmit even larger amounts of electricity over longer distances in an efficient way and with minimal losses.
