Polynesian islands receive funds to upgrade power distribution grid

Tonga: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a second additional financing of $5 million for a renewable energy project aimed at upgrading and expanding the existing power distribution grid in the Tonga’s outer islands of Vava’u and ‘Eua.

“The improvements will make Tonga’s power distribution network more resilient to climate change and rehabilitate electricity network in remote parts of the country,” said Woo Yul Lee, Energy Specialist at ADB’s Pacific Regional Department.

Tonga Power Limited, a government-owned public enterprise implementing the grid rehabilitation, is contributing a further $600,000 to the grid expansion project which is expected to completed by end of 2019.
