Con Ed transformer leaks 140,000L of oil into East River, Brooklyn

USA, New York City: A catastrophic transformer failure at the Con Edison substation along the Brooklyn coastline three days ago caused 140,000 litres (37,000 gallons) of transformer oil to spew from the transformer and begin seeping into the ground and the East River.

The hazardous fluid had spread so far out into the river that the Coast Guard had to declare an 8-kilometre (5-mile) safety zone from which personal and recreational vessels are barred, and ferries have to move slowly, reports U.S. News.

Con Edison has set up floating barriers to contain the spill and clean-up efforts are under way.

The failure also caused a voltage dip that caused extensive subway delays on Sunday.
