Transformer a possible culprit to British Airways massive IT outage
United Kingdom, London: British Airways (BA) suffered a massive power outage that took all of its data systems offline, leaving as many as 300,000 passengers stranded due to the forced cancellation of hundreds of British Airways flights during a long holiday weekend in both the U.S. and United Kingdom.
“It was not an IT issue, it was a power issue,” eWEEK quotes a British Airways spokesperson, “There was a total loss of power. The power then returned in an uncontrolled way causing physical damage to the IT servers.”
While BA is still investigating how a power surge managed to take out their entire data system, it seems that the main culprit is likely the power distribution unit, whose job is to reduce the voltage to the level used by the servers.
This process involves big transformers, whose failure may have destructive consequences. However, there is no confirmation at this point whether the transformers caused the outage.
