Atacama Desert solar project using energy efficient inverter solution

Chile: ABB has supplied an all-in-one inverter solution to the El Romero photovoltaic plant in the Atacama Desert in Chile, which should allow quick and easy connection to a medium voltage transformer station.

The solution included 60 dry-type transformers of 3.6 MVA, as well as 60 3.6 MW inverter stations, an SF6 insulated compact switchgear and the company’s power plant controller system, the company said in a press statement.

The solar plant is situated in the harsh environment of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places in the world, with extreme temperatures spanning from 40°C in the day to -5°C and below at night.

The project is supplying up to 80MW a year of electricity to Google until 2030, with an option for a five-year extension.
