WSP wins contract for Zambia-Congo interconnector

Engineering company WSP has been awarded a contract by the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), a partnership of national electricity companies in the region, for the construction of a 330 kV transmission line between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), reports GCR.

The transmission project, which will include construction of new substations with power transformers and associated electrical equipment, will link Kolwezi in the south of the DRC to the north western province of Solwezi in Zambia.

The project has received financial backing from the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Atmospheric Research and Environment Programme.

The work on the three phases of the project will begin in 2019 and are due to be completed in 18 months.
