Transformer fire stops restoration of power on St. John

Virgin Islands: The island of St. John was left in the darkness on Wednesday night after a power transformer was destroyed in a fire at the Water and Power Authority’s electrical substation.

According to WAPA officials, the transformer, one of two such units at the facility, became engulfed in flames during an electrical service interruption impacting St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and Hassel Island Wednesday afternoon, reports St. Thomas Source.

After service is restored to St. John, WAPA will investigate the cause of the fire, which, given the size of the transformer, might take several weeks to establish.
