66 MVA power transformer burns in Lagos
Nigeria, Lagos: A 66 MVA power transformer was gutted by fire at the TCN’s Alagbon transmission substation in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, last Thursday, plunging the whole of Lagos Island into darkness after the incident.
It took seven fire-fighting vans and about three hours to extinguish the fire, reports Vanguard.
According to Mr. Usman Gur Mohammed, Managing Director of TCN, it will costs about $2 million to replace the transformer.
He also revealed there are plans to upgrade this substation under the TREP programme with two additional 100 MVA transformers and one 300 MVA transformer, and to link it to Alepo and Akangba to ensure enough flexibility for supply power to the island.
