Xcel Energy to use unmanned aircraft systems to gather substation equipment data
Xcel Energy in 2019 plans to deploy an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) to automate grid operations and improve the speed and efficiency of response to variations in customer power usage, reports T&D World.
ADMS requires information from substation equipment such as nameplate data from power transformers, circuit switchers, switches and breakers.
As this information can be time-consuming and expensive to gather, the company will use unmanned aircraft systems to overcome this challenge.
