World’s highest 500 kV substation goes online in Tibet

China, Tibet: The world’s highest 500 kV transformer substation has gone online in Tibet, with experts predicting the region can supply other Chinese provinces with electricity in the future, reports Global Times.

The 500 kV substation was built in Markam county at an altitude of 4,300 meters, making it “the highest 500-kilovolt transformer substation in the world,” according to the statement by the State Grid Corporation of China cited by Global Times.

The Markam substation is a part of the Central Tibet Grid Interconnection Project, which aims to meet the electricity needs of central Tibet and promote development.

Energy experts in China say Tibet has huge potential for generating hydroelectricity and supplying other Chinese provinces with electricity in the future, helping its economic development, reports Global Times.
