Rwanda receives $27M grant to expand power distribution network

The government of the Republic of Rwanda and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have signed a grant agreement for the provision of up to $27 million for phase 3 of the substations and power distribution network upgrade project.

The project is expected to improve and expand the Gasogi substation and associated transmission and distribution facilities located in Kigali, which accounts for approximately 64% of the total power consumed in Rwanda as a whole, reports ESI-Africa.

Currently, Rwanda is unable to keep up with the demand for power which is growing more than 10% each year.

Inadequate investment in the power transmission and distribution facilities and transmission loss of 20% due to degrading facilities causes problems in the country’s power supply stability.
