ABB enables world’s first HVDC grid in China

China: ABB has been awarded a contract to supply several critical elements for the Zhangbei high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area of China, which will enable the integration of remote wind, solar and hydro energy in a transmission ring that ensures optimization of power flow.

For the project ABB will supply transformer components, wall bushings, high-voltage capacitors, an HVDC Light valve, and power semiconductor devices, the manufacturer said in the press statement.

This unique “HVDC grid” is designed by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), one of the world’s largest power utilities.

Delivery of wind energy through network-based architecture will ensure more stable and reliable electricity to meet higher demand during Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
