India, Mumbai: Crompton Greaves (CG) has made a deal with Spanish Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion S.A.U., which is supervising the Nairobi Metropolitan Ring Project, to supply high-voltage (HV) equipment for the under-construction 220/66 kV substations around the Greater Nairobi Metropolitan Area.

The order is worth $ 15 million and includes the supply of six 200 MVA, 220/66kV HV power transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers and lightning arresters. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2014, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The power equipment will be installed in the new 220 kV substations at Isinya, Suswa, Ngong, Athi River and Koma Rock, as well as in the existing Dandora substation.

Nairobi Ring project is worth KES 4.9 billion ($ 56 million) and will help meet Kenya’s rising electricity demand. The project is the largest order for CG from Iberdrola Engineering and Construction.

CG’s CEO and Managing Director, Laurent Demortier, said: “We are delighted that CG will play a pivotal role in Kenya Electricity Transmission Company’s initiative to upgrade Nairobi’s power transmission infrastructure and ensure power transmission reliability in this region. The order takes forward CG’s ongoing foray into Nairobi’s power infrastructure. We thank Iberdrola Engineering and Construction for their continued trust in CG, and we look forward to further strengthening our reputation as a trust-worthy partner for globally benchmarked, cost-effective and reliable power equipment.”
