Didcot transformer to cause big delays on A34
The moving of the first of three 640-tonne transformers from Didcot Power Station is expected to cause big delays on the A34.
The Power Station was disconnected from the National Grid in March after running for 43 years. As part of decommissioning of the site, power company npower has set demolition to begin before the end of the year, followed by dismantling of the six 325ft cooling towers next year.
Three transformers measuring 90m by 5m by 5m are to be moved to Avonmouth docks by Bristol in three separate loads over the next month. They are to be transported down the A34 to the junction with the M4 in four-hour journeys, the first one starting at 9 a.m. today. The other transformers will be moved from 6 p.m. on Friday, the 15th November, and from 9 a.m. on Saturday, the 23th November.
