Amazon has announced plans to invest $12 B in new artificial intelligence data centre campuses in the US state of Louisiana, as competition intensifies among technology firms to expand AI infrastructure.

The campuses will be located in Caddo and Bossier Parishes in northwestern Louisiana and will support Amazon’s AI and cloud computing operations. The company said the project is expected to create 540 full-time jobs at the sites, while supporting around 1,700 additional roles linked to construction, operations and site services.

Amazon recently said it expects to spend about $200 B on capital expenditure this year, more than any other hyperscaler, which combined have forecast nearly $700 B in 2026 expenditures. Most of the investment is directed toward AI-related areas such as data centres, chips and networking equipment.

The rapid expansion of AI facilities has raised concerns in some communities about pressure on electricity and water resources. Amazon said it is working closely with the local utility, Southwestern Electric Power Company, and will cover all costs linked to new and upgraded energy infrastructure required for the campuses.

The company added that it will use natural air cooling where possible to reduce electricity demand and rely only on surplus local water supplies. Amazon also plans to invest up to $400 M in public water infrastructure to support the project.

Other technology companies, including Microsoft, Google and Meta, are also expanding data centre capacity to meet growing AI demand. Meta has selected Louisiana for its Hyperion data centre through a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital.

Amazon said it is partnering with Stack Infrastructure on the Louisiana development.
