Egypt: AMEA Power has competed the installation of all 77 turbine generators at its 500 MW Amunet wind farm in Egypt. More than 90% of the project has been completed and it is set to start commercial operations by the second quarter.
The project is located in Ras Ghareb, within Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate. It is equipped with 6.5 MW turbines supplied by Shanghai-based green technology company Envision Energy. The Chinese manufacturer’s EN-171 machines, with a rotor diameter of 171 metres and a hub height of 94.5 m, form one of the largest wind farms in Africa.
The wind farm could produce 2.3 million MWh of electricity a year, enough to supply roughly 500000 households and offset over 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, the developer estimates. AMEA Power has a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for the project.
