Scotland: The Isle of Man Steam Packet-owned freight RoRo vessel Arrow has been secured for a long-term charter by UK infrastructure group Balfour Beatty. It will provide essential logistics support for SSEN Transmission’s ambitious Lewis Hub and Western Isles HVDC Link project in Scotland.
The 1,057-lane metre Arrow is currently finishing a 12-month charter with DFDS, which concludes on 24 March 2026. This new contract will significantly enhance project delivery and ensure continued smooth operations for Caledonian MacBrayne’s (CalMac) existing Stornoway-Ullapool ferry service.
The Lewis Hub is a pivotal energy initiative that will connect Scotland’s Western Isles to mainland Great Britain’s transmission grid using subsea cables, forming part of the Western Isles HVDC Connection project. This marks a significant step forward in improving energy connectivity for the region.
A key feature of the charter agreement is a “release mechanism,” allowing the Arrow to be utilised by other companies when not required for the project, ensuring flexibility and preventing strain on the vital ferry services, including during CalMac’s LOCH SEAFORTH maintenance and drydocking.
The charter follows close collaboration with Stornoway Port, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Ullapool Harbour Trust, and other local stakeholders to find solutions that support freight logistics without overwhelming existing ferry networks.
