Australia: A landmark electricity substation in south-west New South Wales has been completed, marking a major step in strengthening interstate power connections and integrating large-scale renewable energy. The Dinawan substation, developed by Transgrid, will serve as a central hub for EnergyConnect, the 900-km transmission project linking NSW, Victoria and South Australia for the first time.
Located between Wagga Wagga and Buronga, the substation sits at the junction of a 375-km dual-circuit 330 kV line from Buronga and a 160-km dual-circuit 500 kV line from Wagga Wagga. It will enable new solar and wind generation from the NSW South West Renewable Energy Zone to flow to consumers and support future projects, including the Snowy 2.0 pumped hydro scheme.
More than 750 workers contributed to the construction, which included 6,820 cubic metres of concrete and installation of two 120 MVAr synchronous condensers, each weighing around 300 t and housed in a purpose-built machine hall. The station also features four shunt reactors and two capacitor banks designed to stabilise voltage and reduce losses in the transmission network.
“The Dinawan substation will integrate new solar and wind generation into the National Electricity Market, delivering more affordable and sustainable electricity to households and businesses,” said John Burke, EnergyConnect program director. He added that it will also form part of the proposed VNI West interconnector, improving energy reliability between NSW and Victoria.
Named after the Wiradjuri word for “emu,” the 4-ha site contains advanced equipment sourced from multiple regions. Its completion follows expansion of the Buronga substation and new transmission lines to South Australia and Victoria. Construction on the eastern section toward Wagga Wagga is continuing.
