UK, England, London: UK Power Networks has completed a $20.9 M (£15.6 M) upgrade to the Nelson Street substation in East Ham, significantly boosting electricity capacity and resilience for the surrounding areas of East Ham and Barking.
The project, delivered in partnership with engineering firm Clancy, involved the installation and commissioning of three new 132 kV transformers, each weighing 54 t, along with a new 11kV switchboard. These upgrades replace ageing equipment and have doubled the site’s firm capacity to meet growing energy demand.
Launched in 2020 and now fully energised, the scheme marks a key milestone in UK Power Networks’ ongoing efforts to create a smarter, more reliable local electricity grid.
Awaise Umar, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “By integrating state-of-the-art equipment and increasing the site’s firm capacity, we are not only addressing current demands but also future-proofing our infrastructure to support the region’s growth and sustainability goals.”
The upgraded substation will support thousands of customers, helping to accommodate the increasing use of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other low carbon technologies. It also enhances network reliability during periods of high demand, strengthening the area’s readiness for a more electrified and sustainable future.
The investment aligns with the UK’s broader energy transition goals and reflects the importance of upgrading local grid infrastructure to support the shift toward cleaner energy.
