Nigeria, Edo State, Benin City: The Aruogba community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State has appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo for urgent support in replacing its ageing transformer.

According to Kingsley Ogbeide, Secretary of the Landlord Association, the community has long suffered from constant power outages caused by a weak 300 kV transformer that can no longer meet demand. The unit, located near St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, frequently breaks down and leaves homes and businesses without electricity.

Ogbeide explained that while residents had already contributed nearly $1,340 (N2 M), they still need between $6,700–$7,400 (N10–11 M) more to purchase and install a modern transformer. The total cost is estimated at $8,000–$8,700 (N12–13 M).

He recalled that a similar appeal was made under former Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration but received no response. “We are now reaching out to the current government under Sen. Okpebholo for assistance in resolving the power crisis affecting our community,” he said.

Ogbeide added that the persistent outages had created harsh living conditions, hurt small businesses, and disrupted daily activities. He noted the state government’s broader rural electrification programme, as well as its efforts to improve metering and curb electricity vandalism.

The association said it was ready to collaborate with government authorities to secure funding or support for a lasting solution. Replacing the transformer with a higher-capacity unit, Ogbeide stressed, remains the most practical way forward.
