UK, Ireland: EirGrid has received four large power transformers for the Celtic Interconnector project, which will create the first electricity link between Ireland and France. The shipment arrived at Aghada Power Station in Cork from Rotterdam before being moved to the future converter station site at Ballyadam.

Each transformer weighs around 240 t and will be used to match transmission voltage levels at the converter station. EirGrid said the units are an essential step toward enabling the eventual connection between the two national grids. The company noted that specialist vehicles measuring 94 m in length were required to transport each transformer from the port to Ballyadam.

Michael Behan, chief financial officer at EirGrid, described the delivery operation as a coordinated effort between multiple organisations, including contractors, local authorities and An Garda Síochána. He said the milestone highlights what can be achieved through careful planning and collaboration as the project continues toward completion.

The Celtic Interconnector is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility, supporting cross-border energy infrastructure. When completed, the link will allow electricity exchange between the two countries and support greater integration of renewable energy sources.
