Ireland: EirGrid, Ireland’s Transmission System Operator, has launched a procurement programme exceeding $1 B to support the development of a national offshore electricity grid. This significant investment aligns with Ireland’s 2021 decision to adopt a plan-led approach to offshore renewable energy and infrastructure.

The procurement initiative focuses initially on the east coast and will later expand to the south coast. It is a vital part of the Irish Government’s goal to harness offshore wind energy and transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy system.

The contracts will cover at least eight Operation & Maintenance (O&M) service categories, including:

  • Inspection & Maintenance Support
  • Marine Logistics
  • Warehousing & Handling
  • Subsea Inspection, Repair & Maintenance
  • Asset Health, Security & Operational Monitoring
  • Training & Support Services
  • Health, Safety & Environmental Support
  • Helicopter Intervention Support (for personnel and cargo)

Additionally, EirGrid is initiating a separate procurement effort tied to its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast Enduring Connection Policy (ECP), particularly focused on high-voltage equipment for grid integration.

At the 2025 WindEurope conference in Copenhagen, EirGrid’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, Michael Mahon, stated: “The $1 B in procurements highlight our commitment to delivering offshore renewables at scale and represent a major milestone in achieving Ireland’s clean energy goals.”
