Slovenia: Slovenia’s combined transmission and distribution system operator ELES has unveiled its plans to invest $5.9 B (€5.15 B) in developing its transmission and distribution networks during the 2025 – 2034 period.

The investment includes around $4.5 B (€3.95 B) for the distribution network, and $1.4 B (€1.2 B) for the development of the transmission network, ELES said in a press release on 24 April.

ELES plans to invest $2 B (€1.8 B) in the distribution network between 2025 and 2029, averaging $408 M (€362 M) per year, with annual investments expected to rise to $484 M (€427 M) from 2030 onward.

By 2034, the company will build nearly 4,000 new transformer stations, five new medium-voltage distribution stations, and over 15,000 km of new lines. It will also upgrade more than 20,000 km of existing overhead and underground lines, alongside 4,417 transformer stations and 58 distribution stations.

Additionally, ELES will invest in installing or replacing seven large power transformers for regional power supply, as well as renovating of 19 regional transformer stations. The company will also build seven new 110 / 20 kV regional transformer stations, and establish extensive connection infrastructure for solar and wind power fields. It will also finance 610 km of high-voltage line renovations, 145 km of new lines, and 167 km of new optical connections.

Most of these projects will be financed through EU grants, loans, and depreciation. However, to help cover the costs of these developments, ELES indicated that distribution network tariffs could rise by up to 58.6 %, from 26.5 %, starting in 2027.
