Sweden: Swedish energy company Ellevio has acquired Markbygden Net Vast AB, a company building a power network in the northern Swedish region of Norrbotten which might allow the connection of 1700 MW generating capacity. The company’s grid is currently in the development phase and has a connected capacity of about 250 MW.

It has a connection point to the national transmission grid, with a planned series of wind farms to be connected along the network. Ellevio acquired it from German turbine manufacturer Enercon GmbH for an undisclosed amount.

Ellevio said that the investment advances its strategy to establish itself in the region and follows last year’s acquisition of the sister network, Markbygden Net AB, linked to a wind cluster with a capacity set to reach approximately 3400 MW.

“Within 20 years, Sweden is expected to need twice as much electricity as it does today. Following the decision to halt many planned offshore wind farms, onshore wind clusters like Markbygden 1101 become absolutely critical. We will work actively with our customers to enable the grid connection needed to complete wind production quickly and securely,” commented Ellevio’s CEO Johan Lindehag.
