Poland: Orlen’s unit Energa-Operator has obtained a PLN 7.5 billion ($1.9 billion) loan to fund the modernization of the power grid to help with the integration of renewable sources. The project, financed under the National Recovery Plan (KPO), includes the upgrade and construction of 21000 kilometres of power lines in northern and central Poland.

A crucial element of Energa-Operator’s undertaking is the future integration of up to 9 GW of renewable energy sources along with energy storage facilities. Under the group’s new strategy, energy storage facilities are set to reach a capacity of 1.4 GW. The modernization will enhance the reliability of the grid for 3.5 million customers and enable 200000 new prosumers to connect to it.

Northern Poland is set to play a pivotal role in the country’s energy transition, with the region already hosting the group’s onshore renewable energy facilities. It will soon be home to four offshore wind farms and energy storage facilities.

The system will be supported by two combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants under construction and two additional power plants planned in Gdańsk and Grudziądz. Energa-Operator’s grid connects 9.6 GW or one-third of the country’s renewable capacity.
