Finland, Lapland: Fingrid Oyj and Caverion have signed a $17.4 M (€15 M) agreement to fully renew the 220/110 kV Ivalo substation in Northern Finland, a key facility originally built in 1987. The upgrade will reinforce Lapland’s electricity network and improve long-term security of supply.
A new air-insulated substation will be constructed beside the existing one, which will be dismantled once the new installation is completed. Caverion will deliver the new substation, modernise the protection and automation systems, renew existing equipment and construct a new control room. An additional main transformer will also be installed, increasing both capacity and reliability.
Fingrid describes the project as a major investment in Lapland’s energy infrastructure, noting that the Ivalo substation plays a central role in serving residents, businesses and industry across the region. “We build, renew, expand and maintain the main grid in Finland to ensure a reliable electricity supply throughout the country. The renewal of the Ivalo substation is an important part of this work,” said Project Manager Oskar Nousiainen.
Caverion emphasised its long-standing experience in substation construction. “We appreciate the trust and are proud to play a significant role in securing electricity supply in Finland. In recent years, we have built almost 30 new substations and renovated around 50,” said Kari Aalto, Business Director for Industrial Projects and Infrastructure.
Construction will begin in spring 2026 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2028. The existing substation will remain operational throughout the renewal, requiring careful planning and heightened safety during the region’s challenging winter conditions.
