Nigeria, Lagos: The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed a fire incident at its Egbin Transmission Substation that damaged a 150 MVA transformer and temporarily disrupted bulk power supply to parts of Lagos.
According to TCN’s general manager of public affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the fire started around 6:30 a.m. on 5 August and was traced to a faulty 33 kV instrument transformer installed by Egbin Power Plc. The fault led to a fire on the 33 kV side of TCN’s 330 / 132 / 33 kV Inter-Bus Transformer II, causing oil leakage and damaging the transformer’s main tank.
The incident resulted in the loss of 47 MW of load, affecting supply to the Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132 / 33 kV substations, which serve Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and parts of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) network, including Sagamu and Maryland lines.
TCN diverted the load to a second 150 MVA transformer at the substation, which is now operating under strain. As a result, capacity has been reduced, and load-shedding is ongoing in the affected areas.
Ms Mbah said urgent efforts are underway to replace the damaged transformer and restore normal service. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and are working hard to ensure full restoration in the shortest possible time,” she added.
TCN has also alerted IKEDC and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to manage their loads accordingly while restoration is in progress.
