Canada, Ontario: Hydro One has signed a cooperation and support agreement with a group of eight First Nations to advance two large electricity transmission line projects in northeastern Ontario. The agreement was concluded with the Waasmoowin Opportunities and Consultation Council and sets out a shared framework for developing the proposed North Shore Link and Northeast Power Line between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.
The North Shore Link involves a proposed 105-km, 230-kV transmission line between the Mississagi Transformer Station near Wharncliffe and the Third Line Transformer Station in Sault Ste. Marie. The Northeast Power Line is planned as a 200-km, 500-kV line connecting the Hanmer Transformer Station in Greater Sudbury with the Mississagi Transformer Station.
Waasmoowin represents Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, Batchewana First Nation, Mississauga First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Serpent River First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Wahnapitae First Nation and Whitefish River First Nation.
Under the partnership model, participating First Nations will be able to invest in up to a 50 per cent equity stake in the transmission line portions of the projects. The agreement is intended to ensure Indigenous knowledge, priorities and traditions are reflected throughout planning and development.
Hydro One said the projects are required to meet rising electricity demand in northeastern Ontario and to strengthen the resilience of the regional transmission system. The company described the agreement as a different approach to infrastructure delivery, based on collaboration and shared benefits.
Both projects form part of wider investments aimed at reinforcing electricity connections between northern Ontario regions and improving long-term grid reliability.
