USA, Virginia, Norfolk: On 5 October in the morning, Norfolk Fire and Rescue responded to the 200 block of West Ocean View Avenue following reports of a power outage. Upon arrival, crews discovered a single-vehicle crash in which the car had collided with a 1.8×1.8-m (6×6-ft) Dominion Energy transformer located in the brush on the north side of the road.
Five people were taken to hospital, one of whom sustained critical injuries. The impact severely damaged the transformer’s shell, resulting in the leak of an estimated 380–760 litres (100–200 gallons) of non-PCB (non-hazardous) mineral oil onto the roadway.
Emergency crews contacted the city’s stormwater department, the State Emergency Operations Centre, and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM). Dominion Energy teams were also deployed to assist in securing the site and managing the damaged transformer.
As a precaution, West Ocean View Avenue has been closed in both directions between the 200 and 300 blocks while cleanup and repair work continue. Several residents in the affected area remained without power.
