Republic of Korea, Seoul: Hitachi Energy and HD Hyundai Electric have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on HVDC projects that will support Korea’s clean energy transition and grid reliability.

The agreement, signed during the Sweden–Korea Sustainable Partnership Summit in Seoul, was witnessed by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, along with government officials and industry leaders.

The partnership aims to explore joint business opportunities that align with Korea’s Energy Expressway strategy, designed to supply power efficiently to expanding industrial and metropolitan regions.

Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration unit, said the collaboration combines Hitachi’s long-standing HVDC expertise with HD Hyundai Electric’s strong local capabilities to “deploy HVDC at scale in Korea.”

A spokesperson from HD Hyundai Electric added that the company plans to leverage its new Ulsan factory, dedicated to HVDC transformers, to enhance competitiveness in the growing Korean market.

With Korea targeting an increase in renewable capacity to over 120 GW by 2038, HVDC technology will play a key role in transmitting clean power across long distances. The MoU represents the first formal partnership between the two companies to advance sustainable energy infrastructure and ensure energy security nationwide.
