Sweden, Ludvika: Hitachi Energy has officially begun construction on the expansion of its transformer factory in Ludvika, Sweden, along with a new test hall for transformer components. The projects form part of the company’s broader investment programme announced in June 2024, aiming to grow its workforce in Sweden to around 8,000 employees by 2027 and strengthen the country’s role in the global energy transition.

The Ludvika factory expansion is one of the largest investments ever made at the site. The new 20,000 m² facility is designed to increase production capacity for large power transformers – both AC and DC – by approximately 40 per cent. The expanded factory will feature new equipment, updated production flows and separate unloading areas for trains and trucks to improve logistics. Around 300 new jobs will be created, and recruitment and training are already under way. A dedicated Training Center has been established to support structured onboarding and skills development. Completion is expected in autumn 2027.

In parallel, Hitachi Energy is constructing a new test hall to meet rising demand for transformer bushings. The facility will include an advanced ultra-high voltage test hall and a modern packing and loading area, enabling improved routine testing and increasing capacity for both retrofits and deliveries to external customers. This project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2026.

Both developments reinforce the company’s role in delivering electrification and modern power-grid technologies. The start of construction was marked by a ceremony attended by employees, partners and political representatives, including County Governor Helena Höij and Tobias Andersson, Chair of the Swedish Parliament’s Committee on Industry and Trade.

Thomas Wennberg, Head of the Transformer Business in Sweden, noted that a factory of this scale has not been built in more than a century and described the expansion as an important milestone for the company and the sector.
