India, Karnataka, Mysore: Hitachi Energy has announced a major expansion of its Mysore facility in India, aimed at doubling production capacity for transformer insulation pressboards while pioneering a new chapter in sustainability. By mid-2027, the factory is set to become an ultra-low carbon site, eliminating fossil fuels for process heat generation and relying solely on fossil-free electricity.
The investment responds to India’s shortage of high-quality transformer insulation, which has left local customers dependent on imports. With new lamination machinery and expanded capabilities, the Mysore factory will produce 800 kV class pressboards, serving both domestic and international markets. The facility will also upgrade to support the 765 kV transformer market, currently underserved by Indian manufacturers.
Beyond strengthening supply chains, the project brings multiple benefits: reduced transport emissions through local production, increased resilience against global disruptions, and new job opportunities for engineering graduates and community members.
Sustainability is central to the expansion. The facility has already cut freshwater use by 22 % since 2019, achieved a 100 % recovered waste rate in 2024, and maintains green spaces to support biodiversity. Replacing the final fossil-fuel boiler marks another milestone in advancing Hitachi Energy’s Sustainability 2030 targets.
Mysore produces insulation materials critical to transformer performance. Pressboards, made from pure cellulose, act as barriers ensuring safe oil flow and electrical insulation, while laminated boards provide enhanced stability and resistance. These components are essential for liquid-filled transformers across the world’s highest voltage ratings.
By boosting output and embedding sustainable practices, Hitachi Energy is reinforcing its role in India’s energy transition and the global transformer supply chain.
