USA, Virginia, South Boston: Hitachi Energy has announced a $457 M investment to expand large power transformer production in South Boston, Virginia, strengthening its nearly 60-year presence in the area.

The Swiss-based technology company, a subsidiary of Hitachi, expects to create 825 new jobs at a new campus adjacent to its existing South Boston facility, where around 670 employees currently work. The expansion builds on a $26 M upgrade announced in 2024 and a further $22.5 M investment in Virginia’s Bland and Smyth counties in 2025.

The South Boston plant manufactures distribution and power transformers and related components, equipment increasingly critical as electricity demand rises due to data centres, vehicle electrification and broader grid growth.

The project forms part of Hitachi Energy’s previously announced $1 B US investment plan, with roughly half allocated to Virginia. Once completed, the new campus is expected to become the largest manufacturing site for large power transformers in the United States. First shipments from the expanded facility are planned for 2028.

Local authorities are supporting the development through land contributions, grants and infrastructure assistance, including housing and childcare initiatives to support workforce growth. A new training centre is also under construction to prepare skilled personnel for the expanded operations.
