Brazil, São Paulo, Pindamonhangaba: Hitachi Energy has announced the start of construction of a new transformer factory in Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo. The facility, part of a $200 M investment programme in Brazil, will account for 80 % of the total and is scheduled for completion in 2028.
The plant will produce large-scale power transformers for transmission, generation, and distribution projects in both domestic and international markets. With a built area of 46,300 m², it is expected to create 450 direct and 1,800 indirect jobs. Together with the expansion of the company’s Guarulhos site, the project will double Hitachi Energy’s production capacity in Brazil.
Transformers are critical to grid operations, supporting renewable integration, industrial growth, and the construction of data centres. The Pindamonhangaba site was chosen for its strategic location between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with access to major ports.
The facility will be fully integrated with Hitachi Energy’s TrafoStar™ platform, harmonising design, manufacturing, and quality standards across the company’s global sites. It will also pursue LEED certification, incorporating sustainable practices such as low-impact materials, rainwater reuse, renewable energy, and emissions control.
Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin described the investment as “strategic for Brazil’s energy transition,” while Hitachi Energy highlighted its role in supporting grid modernisation and resilience.
The announcement is part of the company’s $9 B global expansion programme, aimed at increasing transformer manufacturing, R&D, and partnerships to strengthen the global power system.
