UK, Scotland, Glasgow: Scotland’s clean energy sector is set for a further boost with the news that Hitachi Energy will establish a new Engineering Centre of Excellence in Glasgow.

The company plans to open the new facility in the city centre early next year following a $2.3 M (£1.7 M) grant from Scottish Enterprise, part of an overall investment of more than $4 M (£3 M).

The Engineering Centre will create around 90 specialised roles, including engineers and project managers, to focus on upgrading the UK’s electrical grid and supporting the wider transition to net zero. The site will also form part of Hitachi Energy’s global engineering network, with expertise from Scotland expected to contribute to projects worldwide.

The announcement coincides with a Scottish delegation, led by Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy Gillian Martin, attending World Expo Osaka to promote opportunities for energy transition and investment.

Hirohide Hirai, Vice President & Executive Officer at Hitachi, Ltd, emphasised the importance of the UK to Hitachi’s global business, saying the Glasgow Centre will play a key role in developing Scotland’s future electricity grid and welcoming new local talent.

Laura Fleming, Country Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, described the hub as a major step in meeting growing demand for grid infrastructure. She noted that Hitachi Energy plans to expand to over 1,000 employees in the UK and Ireland by 2027, placing Scotland at the centre of its clean energy ambitions.

The move adds to Scotland’s growing reputation as a hub for renewable energy, alongside other major international investments in infrastructure and supply chain facilities.
